If you like FLCL, Try Dokuro-Chan. I beleive it's made by the same people.
And i agree with Inu, Higurashi is the shit.

That was a pretty good list. I haven't seen Akira though, i'll try and find it online somewhere...

I would suggest Neon Genesis: Evangelion.
It's a short series but the story and the messages that are conveyed are just incredible. The ending was hard to understand but I appreciated it a heck of a lot after I fully got my head around it...

I've seen and loved both Princess mononoke and Paprika.

Elfen Lied

It is a very mature anime, it has a -lot- of nudity but is by no means a hentai.

It can also be refered to Japanimation, "weeeeird", anyway, I've never really heard of any of these, I'll just stick to my love of Dragonball :D

You should probably ass everything else satoshi kon worked on there. As for anime, seires wise, Kino's journey, and the allmight Big O. Movie wise, Read or die (just plain fun in my opinion), and Metropolis (a real forgotten gem). you do have a good list going on there.

and before I forget THE ANIMATRIX!

You know, I wouldn't mind Japanese animation as much if they knew a lick about character design! Their characters always look ugly, they seem to melt all over the screen if they have any more lines then a silhouette would have and don't get me started on their pallets, the skin of their character make me want to look away... I suppose their animation could also use some work too all the characters are stiff and, well, unanimated.

No Lucky Star? D:

Yah gotta agree witcha there Akira and Princess Mononoke are sweet. The animation is just really detailed.

For anime movies, Appleseed, The girl who lept through time and Evangelion you are not alone. These are just some of my favorites.

Akira is awesome. I really wanna see Paprika and Tekkonkinkreet. Maybe Mind Game also

cowboy bebop is underated

I was actually thinking about making another post about it next time. Cowboy Bebop is great.

im pretty much a normal anime watcher so i have thee pretty common ones in mind for example bleach, naruto(slightly overated),d gray man, vampire knight

Excellent choices in anime, though i would have added a few more.. Like Ghost In The Shell (The movie not the series) and most DEFINATELY Samurai X! I dare say that movie is probably one of the best i've ever had the pleasure of laying my eyes upon.

If you've not seen it, i highly suggest you do as soon as possible.

I could also suggest Escaflowne, that was a great movie aswell. Of course it's been said before i am sure, but anything from Myiazaki is instantly a must see ^_^

Porco Rosso needs to be up there lol.
should put up the scene where they are boxing cuz their planes didnt work :P

Can't believe none of you mentioned GTO. Great Teacher Onizuka, it isn't fantasy, it isn't Sci-Fi, but both the Manga and the Anime are amazing, you should give them a chance.

Golden Boy - Not what you expect when you watch it, but sneaks up on you and suprises you by how good it is and after the last ep (only about 6) it makes you wish there were a lot more.

My Hime/Mai Hime and My Otome are also great. 2nd one is kind of a sequel in the same way Fierce Creatures is a sequel to A Fish Called Wanda, same actors/characters but different story. Sci-Fi with a great story.

Bleach/Naruto, you need to watch from the beginning and watch at least 70 eps of each, only then do they really come into their own. Once you get into the story of each, it sucks you in, Naruto got me hooked in the water country arc, and Bleach when they went to Soul Society.

Samurai Champloo is pretty good. Rozen Maiden (as mentioned) is also good. Full Metal Alchemist is really good. Full Metal Panic is also great, specially the humour.

So many hidden gems, If I had to give 1 recommendation it would be GTO. It's not a masterpiece visually, it's not an epic battle, but the underlying story is Fantastic!

Cowboy Bebop is, of course, just absolutly amazing (and has already been sugested), figuring among the very best pieces of animation I've ever seen (but then again, I'm a jazz nut, so...) but have you ever seen Death Note or Darker than Black? Both are pretty good too (Death Note, the first half, is excellent). Also: Spirited Away / Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi.

Paprika was cool until the ending *avoids spoilers* then it just goes insain abstract like a famous painting no-one knows the real meaning of or something.

Princess Mononoke is a fave of mine also, it shows best why people call him the "walt disney" of the East. But what's the deal with that Akira trailer? There was at least 3 different english dubs in there x.x

I Would suggest Hayate the combat butler, It's awesome and I believe it's now an anime so =D.
Hayate: why dont i get any presents santa?
Santa: because your poor thats why!
LOL

I suggest Neon Genesis Evangelion, Full Metal Alchemist, Aika and Solty Rei.
